Natural gas and propane have distinctive odours added to them (mercaptan or thiols) specifically to make leaks easier to detect. If you detect a strong sulphur-like or rotten egg odour in your home, it could indicate a gas leak. Check for signs of a gas leak, such as bubbles in water or dirt blowing from the ground, if the leak is outside.

If you suspect a leak and it’s safe to do so, check your gas meter. Note the reading, then wait a few hours without using any gas appliances. If the meter reading changes, it could indicate a leak.
